About the Exhibition

NY2CA Gallery Presents Show & Tell, New Work by Irene Nelson and Nancy Selvin

BENICIA, CA — NY2CA Gallery presents Show & Tell, an exhibition of new work by abstract painter Irene Nelson and ceramic artist Nancy Selvin, on view October 8 through November 15, 2026, at 617 First Street in downtown Benicia.

Bringing together painting and ceramics, Show & Tell explores the ways artists navigate uncertainty through intuition, material, memory, imagination, and the physical act of making.

Irene Nelson works in the elusive territory between memory and imagination. Originally from New York and based for much of her adult life in the San Francisco Bay Area, Nelson describes her work as absorbing both the attitude of New York abstraction and the distinctive sensibility of Bay Area light. Her paintings develop through organic gesture, color, layering, intuition, and persistent experimentation. Rather than beginning with a fixed destination, she allows compositions to emerge through the process itself.

For Nelson, uncertainty is not something to resolve before making the work. It is part of the work.

She describes being an artist as a commitment to continue showing up, to work from a place of not knowing, to welcome mistakes, and to repeatedly ask the question, “What if?” Her paintings reflect that openness. Marks accumulate, disappear, collide, and change direction as memory and imagination move in and out of focus.

Nancy Selvin’s new work for Show & Tell begins with a different proposition.

The works are physical, ceramic, booklike forms whose tactile and sensory qualities reference the enduring literary principle “show, don’t tell.” For Selvin, that familiar phrase takes on new significance at a time increasingly defined by questions of authorship, plagiarism, authenticity, artificiality, and what can or cannot be proven.

Her response is not nostalgia for a simpler world, but an insistence on tangible experience.

A ceramic object is made. It occupies space. Its surfaces record decisions and actions. Like music performed in real time, a handmade tool, a competition, an ancient structure, or a child learning to shape clay, the object becomes evidence of human effort.

Selvin sees value in the skills and processes that make such experiences possible: craft, trial and error, discipline, talent, labor, and persistence.

That emphasis on material and making is rooted in a career spanning more than five decades. Selvin is among the Bay Area ceramic artists associated with the radical California Clay Movement, which challenged traditional assumptions about ceramics, expression, form, function, and the medium’s position within the art world. A graduate of UC Berkeley, she received her M.A. in 1970 while studying with Ron Nagle and Peter Voulkos. She taught ceramics at California College of the Arts and retired from teaching in 2020. Today she maintains an active studio practice in West Berkeley.

The works Selvin created for this exhibition were developed with the expertise and assistance of Eleni Berg, a recent MFA graduate of UC Berkeley.

Together, Nelson and Selvin present two distinct but closely related approaches to living with uncertainty.

Nelson moves toward uncertainty through intuition, vulnerability, experimentation, and discovery. Selvin responds by returning to material presence and the unmistakable evidence of human making.

The exhibition’s title brings those ideas together.

Show & Tell recalls both childhood discovery and a foundational principle of storytelling, but here it also becomes a question: What do we understand because we have been told, and what do we understand because we have encountered something ourselves?

Painting offers marks, color, gesture, memory, and suggestion.

Ceramics offers surface, weight, texture, volume, and touch.

Neither provides a simple answer.

Instead, the exhibition invites viewers to experience the work directly and consider the role art can play in a moment when the boundaries between the real, remembered, imagined, copied, and constructed have become increasingly difficult to define.

About the Artist

Nancy Selvin

Nancy Selvin

Known for her explorations of the vessel form, Nancy Selvin is among a group of Bay Area ceramic artists who identify with the radical ‘California Clay Movement’, challenging ceramic traditions involving expression, form and function and an art world that placed the medium outside the established hierarchy. A graduate of UC Berkeley, Selvin received her M.A. in 1970 studying with Ron Nagle and the late Peter Voulkos. In 2020 she retired from teaching ceramics at California College of the Arts. Selvin maintains an active studio practice in West Berkeley, California.

Artworks included in the exhibition “Show and Tell” are physical objects, ceramic booklike forms, with tactile and sensory detail in honor of that timeless literary advice Strunk and White first gave us in 1959: “show don’t tell.”

As we descend into a vortex of plagiarism, the unreal, the pirated, the unprovable, doubt and skepticism create unknowable challenges. I like the fact that we can experience the night sky, that early each morning the sun is on the horizon, that love exists. This is a time of extreme global uncertainty, but humankind has always coped with the indeterminate. It allows us to find real, meaningful, interpretations, our own strategies: Winton Marsalis improvising on trumpet, a handmade watercolor brush with natural bristle, young children painting pottery, the World Cup competition, Stonehenge: these are REAL human interventions, imparting tangible experience: evidence that craft, skill, trial and error, sportsmanship, sweat, talent, and effort triumph. The works in this exhibition would not have been possible without the expertise and thoughtful assistance of Eleni Berg, recently minted UC Berkeley MFA.

Irene Nelson

Irene Nelson

Irene Nelson is a painter, printmaker and ceramicist based in the San Francisco East Bay. Born in in New York City in 1951, Nelson moved to the Bay Area in the 1970’s where she initially pursued interests in photography, documentary filmmaking, and acting. After returning to art school, Nelson went on to establish a successful 30 year career as the founder of a boutique graphic design firm. The firm specialized in producing Annual Reports.

Since 2012, Nelson has engaged in a dedicated painting practice. Highlights include showing at the competitive San Francisco DeYoung Museum Open 2020, featured shows at Gearbox Gallery, and dozens of curated group shows. Publications include Crocker Kingsley 2022, 48 Pillars, Arc Gallery 2022, Artists of the Bay Area 2021, Spaces Between, Gearbox Gallery 2019, Hariban Awards 2015.

Her paintings, photo etchings and monoprints convey inquisitiveness, a sense of adventure, and the promise of something better ahead. Nelson’s zesty color palette and pared down shapes tumbling confidently through an easeful space combine to create a dynamic, hopeful environment. Nelson’s more recent ceramic work has begun an exploration of her shapes in three dimensional form.

Originally, from New York, I have spent most of my adult life living in the San Francisco Bay Area. My work is an osmosis of the influence of the New York Abstract artist attitude and the sensibility of light in the Bay Area landscape.

As an abstract painter I create impressions constructed from the thin line between memory and imagination. My gestural marks are organic and free from formula and conscious constraint. Whether painting, drawing or working with monotypes, my process is guided by a mix of intuition and tenacious experimentation. Compositions evolve as acts of discovery rather than having a planned destination.

My practice is a process of working through vulnerability to intimacy to strength and the belief that I am a part of something larger than myself.

Being an artist means that one is compelled to make work—to persevere, to exist in a place of not knowing and to welcome mistakes along the way. The materials and methods one chooses is wide open. The important aspects are to create something that comes from oneself, to experiment, to hopefully discover something in your own process. An artist makes things and at a certain point a practice develops.

There is a commitment to keep showing up to do the work, to learn about the work other artists are making, to engage in dialogue with other artists, to be open to using new materials, as we continually ask the question, What if?.
